Pre-Conception Care

Building the Foundation for a Healthy Pregnancy

Most of the critical development of a baby’s organs happens in the very first weeks of pregnancy—often before you have even seen a positive result on a pregnancy test. This is why Pre-Conception Care is perhaps the most important proactive step you can take. It is a dedicated time to optimize your health, manage existing risks, and ensure your body is the healthiest possible "environment" for your future child.

As an obstetrician and gynaecologist, I view pre-conception care as the ultimate preventative medicine. By addressing your health before you conceive, we can significantly reduce the risk of birth defects, pregnancy complications like Pre-eclampsia, and long-term health issues for both you and your baby.

Why Pre-Conception Health Matters

Your health at the moment of conception sets the "blueprint" for the pregnancy. Factors such as your nutritional status, your weight, and your exposure to certain substances can influence the "epigenetics" of the baby—essentially how their genes are expressed throughout their life. Pre-conception care is an investment in your future family’s lifelong wellness.

The Essential Pre-Conception Checklist

During a pre-conception consultation, we work through a comprehensive clinical review:

1. Nutritional Optimization and Supplements

  • Folic Acid: This is non-negotiable. Taking at least 400mcg of Folic Acid daily for at least one month before conception reduces the risk of neural tube defects (like Spina Bifida) by up to 70%.

  • Iodine: Essential for your baby’s brain and nervous system development.

  • Vitamin D and Iron: We check your levels via blood tests. Iron stores (ferritin) are particularly important, as pregnancy will place a massive demand on your blood supply.

2. Reviewing Existing Medical Conditions

If you have a pre-existing condition, we need to ensure it is perfectly controlled before you stop contraception.

  • Diabetes: High blood sugars at the time of conception increase the risk of heart defects.

  • Thyroid Disorders: Your thyroid acts as the "thermostat" for your hormones; if it is off-balance, it can affect your fertility and the baby's brain development.

  • Epilepsy or Mental Health: We review your medications to ensure you are on the "safest possible dose" of the most pregnancy-compatible medication.

3. Vaccination and Immunity Screen

Certain infections can be devastating in pregnancy but are entirely preventable.

  • Rubella (German Measles) and Varicella (Chickenpox): We check your immunity. If it is low, we vaccinate you now. Because these are "live" vaccines, you must wait at least one month after the jab before trying to conceive.

4. Lifestyle and Environment

This is a time for honest reflection on your daily habits.

  • Weight Management: Being significantly over or under your healthy weight range can affect ovulation and increase the risk of Gestational Diabetes.

  • Substance Use: We discuss a plan for total cessation of smoking, vaping, and alcohol. There is no "safe" amount of alcohol in pregnancy, and the best time to stop is before you conceive.

  • Caffeine: We look at moderating intake to less than 200mg per day (roughly one to two coffees).

5. Genetic Carrier Screening

Modern medicine now allows us to screen couples to see if they are "carriers" of common genetic conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or Fragile X Syndrome. Most carriers have no symptoms and no family history of the condition. Knowing this information beforehand allows you to make informed reproductive choices.

The Role of Your Partner

Pre-conception care is a dual responsibility. Your partner’s health influences the quality of the sperm and, consequently, the health of the pregnancy. We encourage partners to optimize their diet, reduce alcohol intake, and avoid smoking/vaping to improve sperm DNA integrity.
