Postnatal Care
Navigating the "Fourth Trimester"
The birth of your baby is a monumental achievement, but it also marks the beginning of a significant period of transition for your body and mind. The "fourth trimester" (the first six to twelve weeks after birth) is a time of healing, hormonal shifts, and adjustment. As your obstetrician, my care for you does not end in the delivery suite. I am committed to supporting your recovery, ensuring you have the medical and emotional resources to thrive as you begin life with your newborn.
1. Physical Recovery: What to Expect
Whether you had a vaginal birth or a Caesarean section, your body has undergone a major physical event.
Lochia (Postnatal Bleeding): It is normal to have vaginal bleeding for 4 to 6 weeks. It will transition from bright red to pink, then a yellowish-white. If you pass large clots or the bleeding increases suddenly, please contact me.
Afterpains: As your uterus shrinks back to its pre-pregnancy size, you may feel cramping, especially while breastfeeding.
Perineal Care: If you have stitches from a tear or episiotomy, keeping the area clean and dry is essential. Using a "peri-bottle" (a squirt bottle with warm water) after using the bathroom can provide significant relief.
C-Section Wound Care: Your incision should be kept clean and dry. Avoid lifting anything heavier than your baby for the first six weeks to allow the deep muscle layers to heal.
2. Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health
The "Baby Blues"—feeling tearful or overwhelmed—affect up to 80% of new mothers in the first week. However, if these feelings persist beyond two weeks or feel unmanageable, it may be Postnatal Depression (PND) or Anxiety (PNA).
Support: I provide a safe, non-judgmental environment to discuss your mental health. Early intervention is key, and I can offer both medical support and referrals to specialized perinatal psychologists.
3. The 6-Week Postnatal Check
This is our final formal milestone. During this visit, we focus on:
Physical Healing: Checking your pelvic floor and any surgical incisions.
Contraception: Discussing options that are safe for breastfeeding and your lifestyle.
Mental Health Screen: A dedicated check-in on how you are coping emotionally.
Future Health: If you had Gestational Diabetes or Pre-eclampsia, we will organize follow-up tests to ensure your long-term health is on track.
